Let children get crafty with nature

01 July 2016

It’s easy for kids to get creative at home using plain paper, some leaves and a simple frame – whether it’s a fun activity you do together, or a project they can be proud of doing all by themselves. Margo shows us how she and her son Bruno (9) create simple artwork together using fallen leaves they’ve collected outside.

‘Even as a little girl, I was always painting leaves and trees. It’s a great way to show Bruno the beauty of nature’

Create a natural collection

Margo and Bruno collect leaves whenever they visit her parents’ cabin in the woods. To display them, Margo rests a blank sheet of paper on the back of a clip frame, then Bruno helps arrange the leaves all over the paper. ‘We don’t even need to use any messy glue,’ says Margo. ‘Once we add the top of the frame, it holds the leaves in place, ready to hang.’

Escape through art

Margo is a graphic designer, illustrator, jewellery maker and painter. Nature has always been her main inspiration, and although painting and drawing is her job now, it’s also her favourite way to relax. ‘It’s kind of a quiet meditation, while you focus on creating something new,’ she says.

‘I keep a stash of blank paper, pencils and frames, so it’s easy to set up an art station at Bruno’s desk or mine’
