A home to fall in love with, over and over again

01 June 2015

Sanne loves to experiment and is a big fan of the modern Scandinavian style – and small updates can make a big difference to the look you’re trying to achieve. ‘I enjoy making changes to my home; I’m always renewing it or making it better – or at least trying to make it better!’

Make your ideas come to life

Sanne and Mari are high-school sweethearts, who’ve been together since they were teenagers. The couple live in a rented apartment, with their baby boy, in the Dutch city of Haarlem – but renting hasn’t stopped them being adventurous in their home and trying out new things to create the Scandinavian style they both love. From customising her kitchen to painting walls in unexpected colours, Sanne has a passion for bringing her interiors ideas to life with new, easy and affordable updates – inside and out. Her passion is contagious and we went to see it for ourselves, to get tips on how to renew the look of a home and make it better.

‘My home is my showroom. I want to show people how easy it is to update your home. Simply painting a wall or adding a new piece of furniture can instantly make your home feel like a different place altogether!’

LET IN SUMMER LIGHT

‘We want to make the most of our big window and in the summer prefer to keep the windows as uncovered as possible so we just have a light, sheer curtain for privacy. Come winter, it’s easy to add thicker, warmer curtains.’

FOCUS ON LIGHTING AND DISPLAY

‘I quite like an industrial look for lighting around the apartment and this IKEA floor lamp fits the bill perfectly. I also like to have things I love on display to make the place feel homey. I collect magazines and keep a collection on my coffee table, for example. They make me feel inspired.’

BRING THE OUTSIDE IN

‘I like to have a sense of nature indoors. And that doesn’t have to be potted plants and flowers, I often just use branches or single stems, which are low-maintenance and easy to change.’

MIX THINGS UP

A dining table doesn’t have to have matching chairs. ‘I really like mix-and-match furniture. I often take something new and mix it with older pieces from second-hand stores and flea markets. I think it give a more diverse look.’

‘With this apartment, I’m learning every day. Painting our dining table grey showed me how simple changes have a big impact.’

Customise your kitchen

‘I customised my kitchen by adding rope handles, which add a rustic look. They’re eye-catching and unique – and easy to change! The kitchen is small, and the two-deck ORDNING dish drainer gives us extra space.’

‘We hung a white blind in front of our bedroom shelves. It looks like a white wall but hides lots of storage behind it.’

Get a new look with textiles

‘I often buy new textiles, especially cushions and throws. It’s a good, affordable way to update your style in the bedroom. I change the duvet cover often. I have a white and a grey one and then can add colour if I want to for a bit of variety. I like a mix of patterned and plain textiles to keep things interesting.’

‘We use all our textiles outside as well as inside. We just bring the blankets and cushions inside again when we’ve finished with them.’

Create an extra room outside

‘There’s lots of room for socialising on our roof terrace. We wanted to make it a social space so Mari built the bench with his father. It has plenty of room for our friends.’ All-weather furnishings, such as the VÄRUM rug, can be left outside all year round.
