From drawer unit to lamp
At IKEA it isn’t all that unusual for a lamp and a drawer unit to have the same construction. Ask Henrik Preutz, the designer behind JONOSFÄR pendant lamp, who found his inspiration this time under his desk.
Story:Under designer Henrik Preutz’s desk at IKEA in Älmhult stands a drawer unit in metal called HELMER. Henrik has had this drawer unit for many years, but it wasn’t until he was asked to design JONOSFÄR pendant lamp that he really truly saw HELMER.
Henrik had namely been asked by product developer James Futcher to create a pendant lamp in metal, which would also preferably have a lower price than all other metal lamps.
Metal, thought Henrik as his eyes landed on the drawer unit under his desk.
“Now wait a minute, HELMER is made of metal and is assembled by customers in their own homes. Wonder how it’s constructed?” Henrik asked himself and actually took apart his drawer unit and discovered that the parts for HELMER snap together, without a single screw. “Wow,” thought Henrik, “I’ll borrow that construction for the new lamp.” And so he did.
JONOSFÄR shade has seven identical parts that snap into one another when you assemble the lamp. When the lamp travels from the factory to your home, these seven parts lie in a flat package that is much smaller than the size of the shade when it’s assembled.
To be sure the lamp wouldn’t be too heavy, metal experts helped us find the thinnest metal capable of resisting pressure without changing form. To make the metal parts easier to bend, the sides were also perforated – which in turn led to light trickling through the small holes, giving JONOSFÄR a sparking effect. A detail that’s both nice and practical.
But it’s impossible to talk about JONOSFÄR without mentioning its colours. Vibrant bright pink, intense green, warm red and graphic black. The colours and the soft, rounded parts on the shade make JONOSFÄR like a radiant flower that grows from the ceiling – in spite of its hard metal.
And it can grow just about anywhere. Above a dining table, in a child’s room, in a country house or in a flat. In a traditionally furnished home or in a modern one. “I think JONOSFÄR works in every room. It’s retro, but fun and modern too. And very IKEA,” says Henrik with pride.
Designer thought JONOSFÄR Henrik Preutz: “There’s a metal drawer unit under my desk. And that’s what inspired me to design JONOSFÄR pendant lamp in a way that allows you to assemble the shade yourself by snapping the parts together, without screws. Small holes were put in the shade so the parts could be folded in the factory. That also gives a sparkling effect when the light shines through, which enhances the design. I think JONOSFÄR works in every room. It’s retro, but fun and modern too. And very IKEA.”
