IKEA launches IKEA Place, a new app that allows people to virtually place furniture in their home

IKEA has announced the launch of IKEA Place, an augmented reality (AR) application that lets people experience, experiment and share how different products will look within a space, such as a home, office, school or studio. From sofas and armchairs to coffee tables and shelves, all of the products in IKEA Place are 3D and true to scale so that customers can choose products that are just the right size, design and function.

Built on Apple’s new ARKit technology, IKEA Place marks an important milestone in IKEA’s digital transformation journey. IKEA is one of the first home furnishing brands in the world to bring this technology to people, changing the way we purchase furniture in the future.

More than 2,000 IKEA products will be available in the app at launch, and in the future, the app will play a key role in the launch of new product lines. The first release will focus on larger furniture for the living room that can be hard to scale such as sofas, armchairs, footstools, coffee tables and top-selling storage solutions. Some of the most recognised IKEA products that are available on IKEA Place, include: the VIMLE sofa, the STRANDMON winged chair and the LISABO side table.

The app will automatically scale products – based on room dimensions – with 98% accuracy so that consumers can see how different furniture will look within their existing space. The AR technology is so precise that users will be able to see the texture of the fabric, as well as how light and shadows are rendered on furnishings.

In addition to digitally placing IKEA products in a room, the app allows people to capture the setting and share as an image or video to get a second opinion. Customers can then purchase the products directly through their local IKEA website in the app.

Michael Valdsgaard, Leader Digital Transformation at Inter IKEA Systems says:

“IKEA Place makes it easier than ever before to make buying decisions in your own space, to get inspiration and try out many different products, styles and colours in real-life settings – all with a swipe of a finger. Augmented reality and virtual reality will be a total game changer for retail in the same way as the internet. Only this time, much faster.”

“It is our mission to create a better everyday life for everyone, everywhere and now that technology has caught up with our ambition, through AR, we will redefine the customer experience in the furniture retail space once more.”
