IKEA Southampton | People + Planet

IKEA is embracing a better way to produce cotton. Working together with partners such as the Better Cotton Initiative (BCI) and WWF® has enabled more than 100,000 cotton farmers to significantly reduce water, chemical pesticide and fertiliser use, while increasing their earnings. By 2015 we want all the cotton we use to be produced this way. Through the IKEA Foundation we also work closely with Save the Children and UNICEF to give at least 16 million children in cotton growing communities better opportunities in life.

Sustainable Life at Home

Make a difference without leaving your home

At IKEA we have loads of affordable products and
solutions to help you live a more sustainable life
at home. They may seem like small things – LED
bulbs, recycling waste baskets, food storage
containers and the like – but that’s the beauty
of small actions: they all add up!

Here at IKEA Southampton we are in the process
of changing all of our store lighting to LED. Not only
do LEDs consume upto 85% less energy they also
last 20 times longer than incandescent bulbs!

Energy and Resources

Doing business in a smart way
As we go about making affordable, functional
products for millions of people, we want to ensure
we use raw materials, water and energy carefully,
and minimise waste. We work to source products
in a responsible way, and invest in renewable
energy and energy-efficient technology to help
tackle climate change and lessen our impact. We
want to create new ways of doing business that
are better for people and the planet.

During the Summer of 2011, we at IKEA
Southampton installed nearly 5000 Photo
Voltaic (PV) solar panels on our roof generating
renewable, sustainable and green energy for
our store.

People and Communities

Putting people first

We want to create a better life for people. That
includes people and communities all over the world.

For a number of years IKEA Southampton has
offered community groups the opportunity to
come and see how IKEA works globally and locally
with sustainability. We have had over 4000 local
residents aged from 5 to 85 attend over 165 tours.
They have learned why IKEA flat packs, we are
a zero waste to landfill store, how we save
energy and most recently about our ambitious
People and Planet Positive stratagey.

At IKEA Southampton, we are dedicated to giving back to the local community while being regarded by our customers and co-workers as a socially responsible company.
