Room by room: get the traditional country style

10 October 2016

We’ve rounded up our favourite ideas for adding rustic style to your home. From curved edges and lovingly aged surfaces, to loose covers, cushions for extra comfort and timeless pieces made from solid wood and wrought iron – here are five ideas to help you get the style. And our mini photo galleries will show you how to make the look work for every room

KITCHEN

1. SOFTEN WITH TEXTILES

Gingham, patchwork and stripes are key textile patterns for traditional country style. And floral fabrics help bring the outdoors into your home and complement natural materials like wood and wicker.

DINING ROOM

2. MIX AND MATCH

Mix plain with patterned, old with new, and curvy with straight for a relaxed country look. Try layering old family china with newer pieces to create a table setting that’s full of character.

LIVING ROOM

3. ADD COLOUR

Start with whites and neutral shades for your floors, walls and larger pieces of furniture; then add colour with cushions, rugs, artwork or an accent wall. Muted yellows and greens, or bold reds and blues, will warm up a white base.

BEDROOM

4. RAW MATERIALS

Choose a mix of wood, stone and woven fibres to give your home a rustic look. And add a handmade touch to your bedroom with wrought iron bed frames, curtain poles or light fittings.

STORAGE

5. A  SELECTION OF STORAGE

Use wicker baskets, glass jars, metal buckets and wooden dressers to add extra country style and texture around your home. Try brightening up an alcove with an open bookshelf, or use fabric to disguise modern bathroom essentials.
