Give old pieces a new lease of life and make new ones stand out. Spray paint each part of a MASKROS pendant before putting it together as a decoration. ‘It took my son Orlando a long time but I just adore it!’ Berni

Add a textile backdrop

Make furniture stand out by adding fabric to the inside, like Berni did with her IKEA cabinet. ‘The African fabric was a gift from a dear friend and I’d never found the right way to display it,’ she says.

Screen with colourful curtains

Textile doors are space-saving in a small kitchen and easy to update. ‘When the doors under our sink were damaged, I replaced them with curtains,’ says Berni. ‘They’re cheerful and practical.’

Create a patchwork feature wall

Go bold with pattern by making a wall collage, like Berni in her bedroom. ‘I wanted to wallpaper my room but couldn’t afford to,’ she says. ‘Using samples instead was a unique way to add impact on a budget – you could try scraps of fabric too.’
