Create some calm with a cosy textile cocoon

01 November 2015

We all need a cosy space to escape to sometimes. It might be from a long commute, a blustery day or busy family life, but  somewhere we can relax, recharge and feel ourselves again. Come see how to make a private textile cocoon that fits into the living room and can easily be stored away whenever you want the whole room open.

Finding a cocooning space is all about the senses. Somewhere you can feel safe, centred and relaxed. Think about the light, sound and feel, and what makes you truly calm. It might be by the window, sitting amongst loads of pillows, or with whale songs playing softly.
Then encircle your space with textiles to make it yours.

Pull out some curtains and surround your favourite armchair in a cosy cocoon, perfect for creating your own calm space after a hard day at work. Start by finding a spot in the room that isn’t in the way of traffic like a corner. Then mark out your cocoon using double curtain tracks. Try to extend the curtain tracks along the walls so your curtains can be pushed aside easier when the cocoon’s not in use. Then hang your curtains. We really like using one light gauzy fabric curtain, to let the light in and another heavier fabric curtain when you want to make a totally private space. Then add some cosy seating, dimmable lights, and some shelves for magazines, incense or cup of hot tea. Whatever gets you in your comfort zone (just don’t forget some soothing music too).

Using textiles are a great way to make a room-in-a-room cheaply and easily. Best of all, they’re
super simple to tuck away whenever you want to open up the room up again.
