Cook together and eat together

01 February 2016

Meals don’t need to be formal affairs with perfect place settings. For Ta-Li and Yi-Hsuan, being with friends and everyone joining in is what matters, so they’ve turned their Sunday dinner times into fun, casual gatherings…

RELAXED DINING SPACE

‘We can have anything from two to 10 guests,’ says Ta-Li. Although the table doesn’t expand, the couple went for the biggest they could fit in their space because they knew it would be used for everything – from meals with friends, to working from home, to family dinners, reading and playing. ‘We use two benches and a mix of chairs from every room. it can get busy but we always manage to fit everyone in!’

WHAT’S ON THE TABLE?

‘We often have a buffet-style meal, with a combination of dishes like pork potsticker and hot and sour soup. Our friends all contribute or bring something and everyone helps themselves. It’s pot luck what we’ll have, so we make sure there is a mix of tableware – deep bowls for traditional soups, platters or chopping boards we can put out and fill up with breads and dumplings so people can grab what they want. The most important thing is to have a fun, welcoming table, so we have lots of colour and an easy way of arranging things. Hopefully this makes guests feel that what matters is the time we spend with them more than how fancy our food is!’
