AWKWARD NO MORE: THAT SPACE ABOVE YOUR KITCHEN CABINETS

01 August 2015

Some things are standard in every kitchen: cabinets, countertops, a sink...and a handful of weird spaces that you don’t really know what to do with. So we thought we’d tackle those areas, one by one, over the next few months. Here, in the first of our series, are a few ideas for how to make that space above the cabinets work for you.

The Gallery Space

It doesn’t always have to be about function. How about using this area as a place to display artwork? For maximum impact in this small space, go bold and graphic.

The Secret Garden

Want to add more green without having to flex your green thumb? Create your own version of bell jars with planting pots, glass vases and some beautiful old botanical prints. No watering needed.

The Catchall

Recycling, bulk purchases, First Aid kit, art supplies… This awkward space is perfect for that mixed bag of stuff you need to store but don’t quite know where it should go. Organise it all in different containers and hide it behind a textile. Poof, gone!

THE EXTENDED OFFICE

Running out of drawer space? Take care of two problems at once by using the space over your kitchen cabinets to stow away documents you don’t need daily access to, but can’t yet get rid of.

THE EXTRA PANTRY

Well, this is the kitchen after all, so why not use this space for dry goods and extra storage when the cabinets start overflowing? It’s the perfect place to dry some herbs, store homemade pickles, and even magazines and cookbooks.

STEP UP

Don’t forget, you still need to be able to reach all of this stuff. Keep a foldable step stool nearby to make life easier.

And one last thing! We think it’s worth mentioning that our kitchen system METOD prides itself on conquering these kind of spaces. So if you’re planning a new kitchen, you can combine the different pieces and parts together in a way that eliminates every single one of them.
