A sociable, space-smart home

01 May 2016
After years of renting her central Madrid apartment out to students, Libertad and her partner Rober moved in and set about making the space their own. We left behind the streets of a vibrant, busy neighbourhood and were welcomed into an oasis of quiet colours, shapes and materials; an escape from the chaos, where everything has its place.

Libertad and Rober’s home truths

OUR HOME IS… a 92m² apartment in the centre of Madrid.

WE LIVE… with our cat Puka, and we’re expecting our first child this year.

I CHOSE THIS APARTMENT… because I love the fact that you can see the sky from our balconies! That’s hard to find in Madrid, and we love being able to see out and let the breeze in.

OUR FAVOURITE ROOM IS… the open-plan living/kitchen/dining space – we often have friends round for parties, and this layout means everyone can be together, even while one of us is cooking.

THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE IS… maximising space in our medium-sized apartment – we have to use lots of clever storage, without losing the clean, open-plan feel.

Open-plan and organised

When Libertad and Rober moved the kitchen from a small, dark room into the main living area, they created a large, open-plan space for cooking, entertaining and relaxing. ‘It didn’t seem fair to leave the person cooking all alone back there, while everyone else was in here enjoying the wine and laughter!’ Libertad planned their METOD kitchen in a triangle, from fridge to sink to hob, to create a functional flow.

Clever storage in a cosy bedroom

Libertad chose open PAX storage for the bedroom so that all their clothes and accessories are easy to find: ‘You can get inspiration for your look of the day, without even having to open a door!’ ‘Plus it ensures we stay organised – when you have doors, it’s so easy to just hide mess behind them,’ adds Rober.

Making practical more personal

‘I love simple, down-to-earth Scandinavian styles, with lots of white and natural materials. Then I add accents of colour – yellow is my favourite –  through textiles and little personal touches.’ Libertad switches up textiles and accessories as the seasons change: ‘It’s important to reflect seasonality in the space.’

Create a warm welcome

‘We love welcoming visitors into our apartment and want to make them feel at home the moment they step inside. This welcome message on the wall is the first thing they see – it adds a dose of positive energy, and it’s a comfortable place for our cat Puka to relax!’

Being smart with space

‘I’d say our style is modern Scandi with an industrial edge, which works really well in an open-plan space – it makes it easy to keep things sleek, bright and well organised, with plenty of storage and some splashes of colour.’
