Dark and cozy dorm room ideas

To make a dorm feel less beige and more like home, top off the basics with pieces that show off you. Check out how we added some darkness, drama and order to this dorm room.
You can choose dorm decor that’s on the darker side like blue, grey and black while keeping a light and welcoming feeling by using lots of soft textiles. IKEA has dorm decorations and plenty of organizers to get your things sorted.
Set the tone with textiles. For a dark look, we chose grey, blue and black for soft stuff like quilt covers, a throw, a rug and block-out curtains. For the canopy, we dyed fabric dark blue and black and threw lighting chains on top (LED doesn’t get hot). Boxes under the bed and an open wardrobe nook maximize storage space.
Bedding helps set a dorm room’s tone and show personality. IKEA has lots of soft, sustainably grown cotton quilt cover and pillowcases like ÄNGSLILJA in gray. For extra cosiness, frame the bed with a dark blue-dyed fabric canopy and block-out curtains.
IKEA has lots of cool room dividers for your dorm like VEBERÖD room divider that can be used for decoration and storage. It has a wire mesh wall and lots of hooks to hang baskets and such. Castors let you roll it where you need it!
Movable, multipurpose furniture is a big help. A floor lamp gives off the right reading light, and you can move it by your bed or armchair, too. A room divider with castors does roll-anywhere double duty for storage and decoration. Clip on photos or hang on stuff like baskets for toiletries (so you can get ready in your room).
Small space organization is a dorm room priority. Even if your storage is a big mess, you can cover it up! Get some TUPPLUR block-out roller blinds from IKEA, like these gray ones, and attach them to a shelving unit. Roll them down to hide your stuff.
Your dorm likely has some storage furniture, but you don’t have to see it! We attached roller blinds to this shelving unit. They create calm and hide your stuff. For storing clothes, papers and snacks, use different boxes and organizers. Group by shelf, activity and frequency of use, so you find what you need fast.
We love to see our customers get creative with our products. Go for it! But please note that altering or modifying IKEA products so they can no longer be re-sold or used for their original purpose, means the IKEA commercial guarantees and your right to return the products will be lost.
