Burlington, ON – The highly anticipated IKEA Halifax store celebrated its Grand Opening today. The new location is the 13th IKEA store in Canada and the first in IKEA Canada’s coast-to-coast expansion; the retailer will open 11 additional stores by 2025, doubling the retailer’s footprint in Canada.

“With the IKEA Halifax opening, our ambitious expansion plans are on track. We have built IKEA Canada’s most sustainable store, created hundreds of new jobs and provided Atlantic Canadians with an opportunity to share in IKEA’s vision to create a better everyday life for the many people,” said IKEA Canada President Marsha Smith. “It’s a truly exciting day for IKEA Canada.”

Thousands attended the opening ceremonies at the 330,000 square foot building. The celebration included remarks from IKEA Canada President Marsha Smith; Sue Coulet, IKEA Halifax Store Manager; The Honourable Keith Colwell, Nova Scotia’s Minister of Agriculture and Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture; Susan LeBlanc, Member of the Nova Scotia House of Assembly for Dartmouth North; Halifax Mayor Mike Savage, and Lindsay McMillan, Breakfast Club of Canada.

IKEA Halifax is the retailer’s most sustainable store in Canada and will be first LEED certified IKEA store in the country. Its sustainable features include: rooftop solar panels, the first solar wall at a Canadian IKEA, a geothermal energy system, electric vehicle charging stations, the first living wall at a Canadian IKEA store and free lightbulb and battery take-back services.

“We believe in our people and that our growth comes from giving our co-workers the opportunity to contribute and develop through career and learning possibilities,” said Sue Coulet, IKEA Halifax Store Manager. “We’re looking forward to becoming an active community partner.”
