SWEDISH MIDSUMMER
Celebrate Midsummer the Swedish way!
Midsummer is celebrated in many parts of the world as the longest day of the year. In the northern parts of Sweden, the sun actually never sets and there is daylight both night and day.
Much of the Swedish celebrations are connected to dancing around the ‘midsummer pole’ with its characteristic flower and leaf decoration, and flower wreaths hanging from a crossbar. Young and old alike join in, dancing and singing with great enthusiasm, often wearing traditional folk dresses.
In many respects, Midsummer Eve is an eating and socializing feast. Appetite builds when dancing around the midsummer pole and having all sorts of traditional fun and games. So when the herring, sour cream with chopped chives, and boiled fresh potatoes in dill are served, it sure tastes good.
