For the IKEA PS 2014 collection we handpicked 20 designers from around the world to work with the in-house IKEA team. To get to know the designers and their IKEA PS 2014 products a bit better we asked them a few questions - Where do you live and work? What’s the idea behind your products? Do you prefer to move in or move out? Below are some of their answers. #IKEAPS2014

A simple wooden box is one of the most basic and yet most functional storagesolutions. By eliminating three of the six sides of the box, while maintaining all eight of its edge corners, we reduce the amount of material by half but still retain all its stacking and most of its containing abilities. Move in or move out? I prefer to move on.

The IKEA PS 2014 greenhouse was inspired by the alpine chalets of my Swiss homeland - a symbol of simplicity and harmony with nature. It can fit on the balcony, in the kitchen or next to the window. It can stand on a table or be hung on the wall. I prefer to move in ... ideally somewhere outside!

PS 2014 BALANCING BENCH

I wanted to design something simple for children to encourage play and movement. They can balance on it, jump over it, crawl under it... then sit down on it to relax... so they can do it all over again! I prefer to move out... into nature. What’s better than to breathe in fresh air in the forest.

The wardrobe is a piece that is free from codes. It can be placed anywhere and due to its camouflage it adapts to any kind of home furnishing. It plays with what´s hidden and what´s revealed and it allows you to create your own design.

I prefer to move in, because moving out is all about moving in.
For the IKEA PS 2014 folding table I wanted to design a table that folds, rather than a folding table. Visually refined and reduced to a minimum due to a smart but simple folding mechanism. Both for indoors and outdoors with a durable yet very elegant top.

I wanted to make simple things to help people with their everyday lives. The corner sofa embraces you like an armchair and gives you the comfort of a sofa. Somewhere to snuggle into that uses an otherwise wasted corner. Moving in is a thrilling feeling with lots of expectations and challenges - no matter where you are.

I just moved in to a house that has been my dream since I was 9 years old, so I will never move out!
In wintertime in Sweden we use something called a “kick” to get around. It is a form of sled that you use on ice. One person sits on a chair with skids. The other person stands behind them on the skids and kicks it forward. I have made a bench with very short skids that can stand nicely on the lawn. It looks like a kick, but it’s a kick bench.

My inspiration was a type of hybrid product that was popular in Poland about fifty years ago. It combined functions in a crude crafty way and I wanted to make a contemporary interpretation. Hybrids make the most of the space you have, like in small homes where seating, reading and sleeping take place in one room. The IKEA PS table lets you charge your phone, stores magazines and provides reading light. I tried to keep the crafty charisma, while turning it into a modern, versatile product. After many changes it’s a different creature but still a creature.

I like moving to new places. I wanted all my products to be small enough to fit my own apartment; that way I knew that other people with limited space could use them as well. The inspiration for the pendant lamp came from science fiction and videogames. The main idea is that the customer can change the shape of the lamp shade and the light output by pulling the string.

The idea started with me thinking about the modern equivalent of the fireplace - the place where people meet in the home, and for me that was the kitchen table. I tried to define a surface in the centre of things where you can collect and display notes and messages the way we do on the refrigerator door.
I started sketching pendant lamps over the table using different ideas and materials. The “clip” pattern was an idea that had both a function and an expression, as it threw light in a pattern. We started working on different functions and ended up adapting the idea to a floor lamp where the pattern and expression came to be the point.

Go out in the world and share yourself. The greatest freedom is to live simply and to be at home within yourself. I was inspired by traveling in Eastern Europe, where I found rural homes with walls covered with textiles, floors with painted tiles, and mirrors decorated with stained glass foil.
Simple means but full of compassion. The carefully structured decorations inspired me to make a grid, in which I could use various lines and colours to create different patterns. The PS mirror, rugs, and cushions are all based on the exact same grid, but use different colours and repetitions to create new visual stories. Much like we do when decorating our homes.

We prefer moving in. It’s more exciting to arrange new spaces. It would signify that we are ready and open for something new to happen.
The idea was to create a work environment within the living space. The furniture we design allows you to continue working at home, but more importantly, to keep your work separate from the living area when you’re spending time with your family.
